The Apartment Community

The Apartment Community is now The Esquiline: A Life Plan Community at the Shrine

Nestled on 200 tranquil, wooded acres in Belleville, Illinois, yet close to everything that St. Louis has to offer, our nonprofit, faith-based Life Plan Community offers independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care. Here, residents of all faiths pursue active aging through wellness in body, mind, and spirit on the beautifully landscaped grounds of The National Shrine of Our Lady of The Snows. And now, we’re introducing a new name with a deep connection to our unique origin.

We’re pleased to announce that “The Apartment Community” is now “The Esquiline.”

From Apartment Community to Esquiline: Why the Name Change?

The Apartment Community is not under new ownership or management. We’ve simply changed our name to more closely reflect who we are: The Esquiline, what we are: A Life Plan Community, and where we are: at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows.

When The Apartment Community first began, it truly was an apartment community. In other words, that was initially the only service offered. However, the community has since grown to include a full continuum of care. It’s now a Life Plan Community, meaning residents can enjoy not only independent apartment living, but also assisted living and skilled nursing services under one roof should they ever need it.

To better express what we do and who we are, the decision was made to change the name of the community.

Why Esquiline: The Story Behind Our New Name

The name “The Esquiline” has a distinct tie to our history. Our founders, the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, are the religious order of Priests who built the first apartments on the grounds of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. Because of that deep connection, the story of Our Lady of the Snows became the inspiration for our new name.

As the legend goes, in ancient Rome, a wealthy childless couple went to the Pope to ask guidance on how to gift their money to the church. Both parties decided to pray on it. That night, Mary appeared in a vision to both, indicating that a church would be built on a site covered with snow.

Remarkably, one hot August morning, snow fell on Esquiline Hill, one of the seven celebrated hills of Rome. All Rome proclaimed the summer snows a miracle and a church was built on the hill to honor Mary.

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows celebrates this story, and our setting atop a hill on its stunning grounds makes The Esquiline the perfect name for our community.
